Sustainability

Here at Em & May, we pride ourselves with being a sustainable and ethical brand with our made-to-order business model. With the global epidemic of fast fashion waste and unethical production methods, more consumers are becoming increasingly aware and conscious of their consumption and where they buy their products. With this in mind, it is very important for us to be fully transparent about all aspects of our business, from sourcing, production and shipping.

  • Materials & Sourcing

The majority of the fabrics that we source are produced in Canada, eco-certified, or deadstock. Deadstock is typically limited edition as they are sourced in low quantity.

Some of our swim fabrics are made with Carvico Vita Econyl, made of an ECONYL® regenerated Nylon that is made from recycled yarn. It is ultra-chlorine, sun cream and oil resistant, and maintains its shape with proper care. It is also certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex®.

The elastic used in the swim and lounge pieces is also Oeko-Tex® certified.

We are working towards a future where we use entirely Oeko-Tex® certified fabric and deadstock fabric.

  • Production

At Em & May, we make all pieces made to order in our studio located in the Mile End of Montreal. This allows for a close eye on production to ensure quality but also enables my employees to be paid fairly. Our made-to-order business model also leaves us with little to no waste as we only produce what is necessary.

  • Packaging

For all shipping purposes, we use products made from recycled materials or other eco-friendly options. Our hang tags are made from recycled paper, as well as the local pickup bags. Our tape is printed on a gummed kraft paper that is fully recyclable and our stickers are printed on eco-friendly paper. Once our products are shipped to the consumer, it is easy for them to dispose of our packaging. We also exclusively use recycled cardboard boxes to mail our orders.
